Understanding Policy Basics
Every standard insurance policy consists of five contractual sections. Mastering these distinct components enables policyholders to identify coverage gaps before a loss event occurs:
-
Declarations Page (Dec Page): The summary sheet outlining the named insured, policy term, effective dates, premium total, scheduled property, and coverage limits.
-
Insuring Agreement: The core contractual pledge stating what hazards, liabilities, or losses the insurer agrees to indemnify in exchange for premium payment.
-
Exclusions Section: Explicit restrictions enumerating events that are strictly outside policy coverage (e.g., intentional damage, wear and tear, nuclear hazards, flood, or war).
-
Conditions: Administrative and legal rules governing cancellation notices, prompt proof of loss filings, and subrogation rights.
